BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) Passport devices have done very well in the Indian continent, and all the units have been sold out on Amazon India – the e-commerce giant. The device was found to be more popular in the areas that fall outside the eight metros in the country.
“Amazon.in has received orders for the BlackBerry Passport from 115+ cities across India,” the statement issued Thursday said. The number of units sold overall in the country has not been revealed by the company as yet.
Fresh stock next week
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has Amazon.in as its exclusive online partner for selling of Passport in India. The device was offered for pre-ordering on the 29th of September exclusively on Amazon.in, and was launched at the price of Rs. 49,990 (approx $800) on October 11. People can still place pre-orders for the device on the e-commerce site as the new stock is scheduled to arrive next week.
The device is different from the smartphones available in the market as it comes with a unique square shape. The device comes with a touchscreen that is 4.5-inch, an aspect ratio of 1:1 and a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels. The device has a RAM of 3GB and is powered by a 2.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor. There is an internal storage of 32GB, which can be expanded up to 128GB using a micro SD card. The front camera is 2 MP and the rear camera is 13MP with optical image stabilization.
Limited supply of BlackBerry Passport
The device comes with a unique screen and innovative keyboard, which is limited in supply, and hence the company is forced to hold back the new device shipments, as informed by Todd Coupland, an analyst at CIBC.
“Shipments, however, are being held back by supply constraints for unique screens and keyboards that will limit any upside in fiscal Q3,” said Coupland.
Weak sales data for the Passport device from BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) has led CIBC World Markets to reduce the estimated quantities to be shipped for the third and fourth-quarter. For the third-quarter, Coupland made a shipment forecast of 2.3 million units earlier, which is now reduced to 1.6 million. For the fourth-quarter, an estimate of 2.5 million units earlier is now reduced to 1.5 million units.
