Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) released its diversity report showing the demographic characteristics of the employees of the company in the United States. Data fprom the report showed that the Cupertino-based tech giant’s workforce is dominated by white males.
The diversity report indicated that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has 98,000 employees worldwide. Data showed that 70% of the total employees of the iPhone and iPad maker are male.
In the United States, the tech giant’s workforce in the United States is composed of white (55%) black (7%), Asians (15%) and Hispanic (11%). It also showed a 9% undeclared race or ethnicity.
In terms of leadership positions, the diversity report showed the 64% of the executives are white, 26% Asian, 6% Hispanic and 3% black.
In a statement, Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) emphasized that the company knew from the very beginning that diversity is critical to its success. According to him, “We believe deeply that inclusion inspires innovation.”
He emphasized that Apple’s definition of diversity is far beyond the traditional categories of race, gender, and ethnicity.” According to him, it includes sexual orientation, veteran status and disabilities.
He mentioned two employees to show the kind of diversity within Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Kim PaulK, a specialist at Apple Store on West 14Th Street in Manhattan has a medical condition. Her vision and hearing were impaired, but customers admire her service, which represents the best characteristics of the tech giant.
The other employee is Walter Freeman, the head of the procurement team of the company in Cupertino. Cook mentioned that Freeman was recently recognized by the National Minority Supplier Development Council.
Cook said, “Let me say up front: As CEO, I’m not satisfied with the numbers on this page. They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them. We are making progress, and we’re committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products.”
He pointed out that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) published its diversity report because it is committed to transparency.
Cook added, “All around the world, our team at Apple is united in the belief that being different makes us better. We know that each generation has a responsibility to build upon the gains of the past, expanding the rights and freedoms we enjoy to the many who are still striving for justice.
