Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) criticized Android operating system of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) during its 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) today. The search engine giant distributes its Android operating system for free and it is widely used by majority of mobile phone manufactures such as Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (KRX:005935), the strongest competitor of the iPhone and iPad manufacturer
Android phone buyer made a mistake and switch to iOS
During the WWDC 2014 conference, Cook touted that many of the customers who purchased phones powered by the Android operating system made a mistake. He also emphasized that 130 million customers bought one of the products of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) were first time buyers over the past 12 months. “Many of these customers were switchers from Android. They had bought an Android phone, by mistake, and then sought a better experience and a better life, and decided to check out iPhone and iOS,” said Cook. After saying such statement, he received a resounding laugh from the attendees in the event. In addition, Cook also pointed out, “Nearly half of our customers in China in the past six months switched from Android to iPhone. This is incredible.”
Cook says only few Android users run KitKat
He also emphasized that a small portion (only 9%) of Android phone users are running KitKat, the latest version of the operating system on their devices compared with 89% iOS 7 users. Cook said, “Some are on [Android] from four years ago — that’s like ancient history!” He added, “Less than 1 out of 10 of their customers are on their latest versions. That means these customers are not getting great new features. They’re not able to run the latest apps, and they’re not getting security updates they need to stay safe.” Furthermore, Cook presented a slide that reads, “Android fragmentation is turning devices into a toxic hellstew of vulnerabilities,” a comment from Adrian Kingley-Hughes of ZDNet.
Registered Apple developers increased 50%
During the conference, Cook also stated that the number of registered developers of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) reached a total of 9 million, an increase of 50% since last year. During the event, Cook also talked about the new version of the Mac Operating systems dubbed as OS X Yosemite, which received a positive impression from developers. The Cupertino-based tech giant described the new operating system “the future of OS X” with incredible new design and amazing new apps” that “work beautifully with iOS.”
