Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KRX:005930) will soon come up with a new range of smartphones that are curved, and the ‘Bendgate’ issue faced by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) due to its new iPhone 6 devices is being used by Samsung for the promotion of its intentionally curved smartphones.
Image of Galaxy Note Edge was tweeted by Samsung Mobile on Thursday. The tagline below the image says “Curved. Not bent” followed by the hashtag #GALAXYNoteEdge.
Rivals using the opportunity
The Note Edge device sporting a 5.6-inch screen is scheduled for release in U.S. late this year and is slightly curved at the right edge. Apple iPhone fiasco is being taken advantage of by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KRX:005930) tweet.
Similar set of Tweets came from LG taking a dig at the Bendgate, and at the same time promoting their own curved device. The UK division of LG Electronics Inc. (KRX:066575) posted a tweet with hashtag #Bendgate followed by an image of LG’s G Flex phone. There was also a link to the video that talked of self-healing and durability skills of the phone posted on YouTube. Another tweet from displayed an image of G Flex with focus on displaying the phone’s curve and employed the hashtag #bentgate.
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) too joined the fun, and its CEO John Chen told the crowd “I challenge you to bend the Passport”; while unveiling its boxy-looking Passport device on Wednesday.
Bendgate bending Apple’s image
Bendgate is the name dubbed for this flaw noticed in the new iPhone 6. A video has been posted on YouTube by Lewis Hilsenteger from Unbox Therapy, who is seen applying pressure to the iPhone 6 and there is a small dent only. This led to the conclusion that bigger iPhone bends more than the smaller one.
The reason cited by some people for the flaw is that the device has a thin body made of aluminum, which makes it more prone to bending. The problem has been more prominent with the Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 6 Plus (5.5-inch) as compared with the smaller iPhone 6 (4.7 inch) version.
