Is it possible that David Hasselhoff will make a comeback on the big screen as Michael Knight, a hero that fights crime in the NBC’s action series called Knight Rider? Although it doesn’t seem as this is a final decision for the Knight Rider big screen adaptation, Hasselhoff himself said that he really wants to come back as his legendary character, and this guy compares the storyline to Logan, the recent R-rated comic book adaptation by 20th Century Fox.
“I have met Robert Rodriguez. He does Dusk til Dawn and Machete. And I said ‘You need to do Knight Rider.’ Because he was doing a marathon of Knight Riders and he said ‘Can we have a selfie!?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t want a selfie! I want to do the movie! I want to shoot the TV series! I want to bring it back and make it dark! Michael Knight comes back and he’s pissed.’ … I hope it happens, and if it does, it’ll be kind of like Logan. It will be dark. Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in 2017. Knight Rider. The saga continues.”
One of the biggest obstacles that have to be solved is giving the right tone to the Knight Rider movie. What attracted the audience most in the original series was the goofiness of the plot. It could be a good move that David Hasselhoff approached Robert Rodriguez. This filmmaker based in Austin, Texas typically makes R-rated action movies with the tongue-in-cheek satiric type of humor that the Knight Rider movie exactly needs. Furthermore, Rodriguez is very conscious about the budget and would be crucial in stepping up KITT for the big screen. Logan movie had an approximate budget of $100 million, but Knight Rider doesn’t really have the same franchise track record at the box office. However, we must admit that it would be one good summer blockbuster where an older Michael Knight rides KITT in a Mad Max style.
No matter how amazing it would be to have a Knight Rider finale on the big screen, it’s not very likely that this project will be realized. Last year, it was disclosed that there are plans to reboot the Machinima web series franchise. In charge of the production would be Justin Lin, responsible for The Fast and the Furious. Recently, David Hasselhoff suggested that he’s taken part in this new project, so any ideas for the Knight Rider movie would have to be put on hold.
Despite the fact that Robert Rodriguez is a multitasker, working on several projects simultaneously, he hasn’t indicated that he plans or even wants to work on the Knight Rider movie. It is probable that the selfie that David Hasselhoff mentioned was the one that Rodriguez published last summer on his Twitter account, just a couple of months before the announcement of the new web series.
