Over the last couple of seasons it was Barry Church that usually started at the strong safety position. He was a veteran of that Dallas Cowboys defense that lead this bunch each year, patrolling in the back and looking where he needs to help, which player needs to be double teamed, etc. Now, he is not on the roster anymore after most of the starters in the defensive backfield left the team. There are holes to be filled back there. So, who is going to fill this strong safety void?
Going into the camp, we can say that our favorite is Jeff Heath. He is a five-year veteran that has had a lot of time to learn the game from the guys that he played with. Jeff has improved each and every season, played a lot of special teams too, but it seems that this is the year in which he finally enters the starting lineup and proves everybody that he is a good player.
Another guy that has a shot going into the camp is second-year player Kevon Frazier. He spent most of his rookie year playing in the special teams. Just like many others on the roster, he will be looking to have a good camp and to show the coaches that he can do a good job back there. It is all about the trust and Frazier will have to earn it.
Robert Blanton and Xavier Woods are two guys that were also added, but it is more likely that they are going to compete with Frazier for the spot rather than against Jeff Heath for his starting role. There is no doubt that Heath is the clear-cut favorite to start at strong safety for the Cowboys going into the Week 1.
