The Dallas Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott has been accused by the NFL of domestic violence, and he could face a one- or two-game suspension. Elliott is expected to respond sometime next week. Adam Schefter of ESPN talked about the possibility of suspension although league denied it and made a decision on a course of disciplinary action. According to Schefter, we should expect a “short” suspension.
Based on the NFL personal conduct policy, there is an option of up to a six-game suspension for those who are facing accusations for the first time even if they’re not convicted of a crime or face legal punishment. When mitigating factors are taken into consideration, the suspension length could be reduced.
Last year, Elliott was questioned by authorities, and he was cleared of any legal wrongdoing because the city prosecutor from Columbus, Ohio determined that there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue charges after a time-consuming investigation. However, the NFL decided to begin its own investigation, declining a status update in January and February.
After the Cowboys’ season had ended with a loss against Green Bay Packers deep in the playoffs, Elliot said: “I do want closure.” “I do. I would rather them not drag it on as long. I think if there was something to find, which there’s not, they would’ve found it by now. The police did a very thorough investigation. I will tell you this — it just seems like they’re dragging their feet right now. Who knows, man? I just want it to end.”
