Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Nest announced today that Dropcam is now added to the list of products that work with Nest. It is now compatible and works with a good number of whole-home automation systems such as URC, RTI, Creston and Control4.
Nest reported that since last year, they have been working on making the Nest Learning Thermostats and the Nest Protect Smoke Alarm connect to the rest of the home. They launched Work with Nest along with partners like Whirlpool, Jawbone and LIFX to make connections possible.
The Works with Nest developers program was launched last year to make it possible for Nest products to connect and interacts with other home devices such as appliances, security alarms and even outside the home like your the car which can let the thermostat in the home know that your are coming home to adjust the heat/cool level accordingly.
Preparations for the Internet of Things
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) seems off to a good start in the prep for the Internet of Things (IoT) which has a huge potential worth trillions of dollars according to experts. A report in ZDNet puts the estimate at $7.1 trillion by 2024. Nest products integrating with and controlling home devices is a great start towards covering a wider scale of things.
Back in May, we had a post about rumors floating around on the web that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is working on a large-scale cloud Wi-Fi network for business. This can only point in the direction of the Internet of Things road map.
The Internet of Things is definitely the next big thing and giant companies are racing to grab a piece of the pie before it;’s too late. Samsung Electronics has acquired SmartThings, the startup that makes smart controllers and monitors for the home. Apple has the HomeKit of course and BlackBerry is working on its project called Ion and its QNX Software Systems launched Cloud Business to power the Internet of Things.
