Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone models 5, 5C, 5S and 4S are the most popular among the people, who are involved in the theft of these phones, according to BBC UK. This information has been provided by Home Office, who recently compiled a Mobile Phone Theft Ratio. They found that BlackBerry 9790 and few models of Samsung and HTC phones were also among the popular theft objects.
Women and young users most targeted
The victims of these thefts are most often either women or people in the age group of 14 to 24 as revealed by the data. In most of the cases, the theft takes place, when people leave their phones unattended for short durations. Pickpocketing is also responsible for many thefts that took place.
Though a decline in theft rates has been noticed in the tenure of coalition government, but it has not been checked fully and therefore, it still remains a primary concern, says Home Secretary Theresa May, who is expecting the consumers to benefit from the new index by getting more informed about the habits of thieves and thus protect themselves from pickpocketing and stealing.
Theresa May sai, “People are increasingly carrying their lives in their pockets, with bank details, emails and other sensitive personal information easily accessible through mobile phones,” and added, there is a need of equal efforts from the government, police and industry to curb the crime.
Apple making sincere efforts
All the giant mobile phone companies including Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Samsung, Nokia and HTC have been trying to develop features that can put a check on such crimes by providing device tracking facilities, and also wipe off the confidential data stored.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has taken some serious measures to control this and with iOS 7, which it updated in September 2013 has introduced latest security measures that helped in substantially reducing the number of thefts that take place, as informed by the Metropolitan Police intelligence.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) told the BBC, “With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone… if you ever lose it. This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it.”
Crime Survey for England and Wales has indicated that during 2012-13 there were as many as 742,000 mobile thefts that took place in England and Wales.
