The Dallas Cowboys are once again struggling with the secondary because veteran cornerback Nolan Carroll was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Monday morning. Carroll was pulled over for a traffic violation, and the officer realized that he was driving while impaired, so he had to arrest him. Meanwhile, a team spokesperson said: “We are aware of the situation and are gathering information at this time.”
In March, Carroll signed a three-year contract with the Cowboys since the team has struggled with their defensive backfield. Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne left the squad after a long time so, the Cowboys’ front office hoped that the signing of Carroll will fill the gaps.
This arrest will only bring legal problems to the team from Dallas. Earlier this spring, the third-round draft pick Jourdan Lewis was also arrested on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. However, he pleaded not guilty, and he is confident that he will walk free after the trial which was scheduled for July 24.
Carroll’s arrest is probably not going to influence Dallas’ plans significantly, but it has definitely created a turmoil and brought a headache to the team. We have already said that Carr and Claiborne departed, but the squad also allowed safeties Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox to leave in free agency. Carroll is supposed to fit with Orlando Scandrick and Anthony Brown, and we will see how that goes.
During the draft, the Cowboys focused on defense and before Lewis, they went with the Colorado corner Chidobe Awuzie, while also drafted were safety Xavier Woods and cornerback Marquez White. The Cowboys managed to add depth to the secondary, but inappropriate off-field behavior like Carroll’s is never good for the team.
