Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) the maker of Android OS is ruling the smartphone market with its apps as well. The apps are designed for the smartphones and tablets as these are used more by the people rather than the personal computers, and hence internet usage is also more on these. ComScore is an analytics company based in America that recently released a report on the usage of smartphone apps in the United States. The survey revealed that five apps from Google have been successful at acquiring a place among the top ten apps in the US.
Google apps top the charts
The most popular of those is the video streaming app ‘YouTube,’ which has 83.4 million monthly users in the U.S. and ranks second. Google Play app has 72 million monthly users and has acquired the third position. This app comes pre-installed in the devices run on Android OS. The fourth position is again held by a Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) App called search, which has 70 million monthly users. The sixth position is held by ‘Google Maps’ app with monthly users amounting to 64.5 million. The email app Gmail makes a place for itself at the seventh slot with 60 million monthly users.
Apps ranked by downloads not quality
While the United States has a high percentage of tech users compared to the other nations, but users are not very keen of using new apps and prefer limiting themselves to using selective apps. Tracker has observed that the people in U.S. are not downloading as many apps as in the other parts of the world. For several months no download of any new application is made by the majority of 65.5% users.
“People only have so much storage space on their phones, so they really have to be selective about which apps they download,” as per the statement given by Adam Lella, the marketing analyst at comScore. The remaining percentage of people sticks to their preferred apps and their updates.
Quartz is yet another analyst firm that explains the low download percentage saying that the apps listed on the app stores such as Apple App Store and Google Play Store are ranked by the number of downloads and not by utility. Hence, the users get confused and not sure of its quality which deters them from downloading apps.
