As we now know, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens had a great storyline going for almost eight months, and it was definitely a good idea for the WWE to put these two together in programming as they did very well for themselves and the company. Two great in-ring workers, with great character and great personalities. You can’t ask for much more than that.
But, back in August, Chris Jericho had some other plans before he learned that he is going to be working with Kevin Owens. Just like Cena now, and many other before him, Jericho is a part-time talent that is all about putting the younger guys over. He knows that he is a well-established guy on the roster and that he is always going to have its fans. He is also well aware that he has a status of a legend in the WWE, so he really doesn’t need to dominate and win against the guys that need to end up victorious in order to establish themselves as big-time players in the company.
That is why Jericho had an idea to work with Shinsuke Nakamura at Wrestlemania 33 if he was brought up to the main roster before the biggest show of the year. Of course, that didn’t happen, and he ended up breaking up with Owens and fighting him at Mania. Here is what Y2J had to say about that.
“So then I just kept and eye on it ( a situation with Owens) and I remember going to talk to Vince before SummerSlam and saying, one of my ideas was to work with Nakamura at Wrestlemania cause I worked with him in Japan, and I said ‘this guy is great.’ He needs to be in Wrestlemania, I want to introduce him to the world. Then about two weeks later I said I think we can do Jericho vs. Owens at Wrestlemania, I think I have enough steam, we just started the team. I think Summerslam was our first official against Enzo and Cass. That’s how it started, was from there.”
