Originally intended to be a movie, 13 Reasons Why was eventually released as a TV series adaptation of Jay Asher’s novel of the same name. The first season of the series, subtitled Beyond the Reasons, started airing in March this year on Netflix, and it has proved to be one of its best TV Shows and without a doubt the series that has been most tweeted about this year, at least for now.
There were some people who criticized the series for being too dark and even presenting suicide as the right solution, but under no circumstances should that be taken as the moral of its story. In case you haven’t watched it, 13 Reasons Why follows the last days of a young girl’s life, before she decides to end her life. The very title of the series was inspired by the 13 video tapes this girl, Hannah Baker, leaves behind, naming one reason why she chose to end her life on each tape.
Bearing in mind that, in addition to death, the series also tackles the issue of se*ual abuse, we can say it is not that strange that a certain number of people didn’t find it comfortable to watch this one. However, in spite of this, 13 Reasons Why proved to be successful enough to prompt Netflix to pick it up for Season 2. One of the cast members, the actor Christian Navarro, who plays Tony Padilla, has recently confirmed that there will be a sequel, as he posted on his Instagram “The story isn’t over. Season 2 #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”
Even though Hannah commits suicide in the very first season of the series, there is still enough material to make another one, as other characters’ stories remained open-ended. Some assume the upcoming sequel will shed some light on Alex, Justin, Tyler, and Jessica and their life stories. Since there is no second volume of the novel the series is based on, we can only guess what/whom the new episodes will revolve around.
As for the Season 2 release date, it’s still too early to tell when exactly we should expect it, as it has just been announced that the series will be renewed for another batch of episodes. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know as soon as we find out more about it.
