Although they’ve tried for so long, movie studios still haven’t figured out how to make a successful game-based movie. Every couple of years, a mild success is achieved with a film such as The Angry Birds Movie. But other titles, such as Super Mario Bros. and Assassin’s Creed have continued the belief of a video game curse. This genre is in despair for at least some recognition on the big screen, and recently there’s been one certain way to both start up your project and make sure that it’s a box office hit – just include Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
It appears that this guy is on the big screen and the small screen as well. Just last month, he took part in The Fate of the Furious, which earned astonishing billion dollars in just three weeks from the release. This month, he will star in a big-budget remake of Baywatch, a TV sensation from the 90s. This movie is probably going to be one of the biggest hits this summer. And now, Johnson is again teamed up with his San Andreas director, so that they can make an adaptation of the classic arcade game Rampage.
They’ve officially started filming in Atlanta, Georgia, and the release date is planned to be delivered in less than a year. Warner Bros. marked this event by releasing the official plot synopsis for the awaited adaption of the video game:
“Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry transforms this gentle ape into a raging monster. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered alpha predators. As these newly created monsters tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.”
The supporting cast includes some big names such as Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Joe Manganiello. We will also see P.J. Byrne, Breanne Hill, Jake Lacy, Jack Quaid, Matt Gerald and Marley Shelton. Behind the camera, there a lot of talents, such as Jaron Presant, the director of photography, who recently worked on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Andrew Lockington, who is again working with Peyton after their hit San Andreas, will be composing the music.
The primary Rampage video game was with a rough plot about three humans being transformed into a gruesome lizard, wolf, and ape, having come into contact with some experimental drugs or radiation. The player controlled the monsters as they went across the country and destroyed cities bit by bit, while the unfriendly army pursued them.
With the action and memorable gameplay, this title is also remembered for its comedic taste. It appears that the Rampage movie will feature this similar cheeky tone if we can trust the latest Johnson’s Instagram post, which will definitely bring relief to the fans. We rely on The Rock since this is a real chance for the video game genre to redeem itself.
