Directed by Sayo Yamamoto and written by Mitsurō Kubo, Yuri on Ice first appeared as a sports anime series in October last year. The first season brought only 12 episodes, and it ended in December. It was immediately well received in Japan, and soon afterward, it was available for English-speaking countries as well (via Crunchyroll and other online video streaming websites).

The story revolves around three figure skaters. Two of them, Yuri Katsuki and Yuri Plisetsky, take part in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, while the third main character, Victor Nikiforov, is Yuri Katsuki’s coach. Some people believe that it was due to numerous beautiful choreographies that the anime eventually became so popular. Kenji Miyamoto was in charge of those, while Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba composed the music.
Even though fans probably expected to hear some news about the series renewal, the showrunners decided to surprise us and make Yuri On Ice movie first. According to Crunchyroll, the anime cast members broke the great news last week. In addition to this, Sayo Yamamoto also shared his enthusiasm regarding their upcoming project. “I truly feel like the story of ‘Yuri!!! on ICE’ was able to be summed up over the course of its 12 episodes, but I’d be lying if I said that it was over. [Laughs] … We can’t stop, we won’t stop, we refuse to stop,” the series creator said.
Yuri on Ice Movie Release Date
As their plans for the movie have just been revealed, it’s still too early to talk about some specific details about the plot, let alone about the release date. But, the important thing is that it has been confirmed that the film is in production. As for the anime Season 2, we probably shouldn’t expect it soon, as the movie is now at the top of priority list. That’s all we know, at least for now, so stay tuned for more details.
