Dwayne Johnson stars in the Fate of the Furious movie and there is one scene that has nothing to do with cars or chase, but it is one of the most powerful scenes in the FF8. Namely, The Rock performs a haka with a girls’ soccer team, and you can watch it here. In order to mark the recent release of the movie, Paramount Pictures sent the clip to Newshub.
Dwayne Johnson is portraying a guy called Luke Hobbs, and he is leading his daughter’s football team in a haka. There are two minutes to play, the scores are tied, and it’s the championship game we are talking about. In August last year, Johnson wrote about haka, saying that it was a part of his Polynesian heritage.
He posted on Instagram: “It’s 100 percent the most REAL and AUTHENTIC scene in the movie. No acting. Just from our hearts and WARRIOR MANA (warrior spirit). To our Polynesian culture the HAKA is extremely emotional and spiritual. A pre battle ritual where we call upon the recognition of our ancestors and to give us strength. And if need be, we are prepared to die today, only because we have lived greatly and proudly as people.”
“My biggest role here was making sure that that spiritual aspect was embedded into the people that I was teaching,” continued the former WWE star.
Layne Hannemann, the movie’s choreographer, made sure that the haka was blessed by Māori elders from New Zealand. Recently, we could have seen Johnson’s Maui from Moana performing a haka as well. According to Johnson, when you watch the Haka with the soccer team, it will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Is that the case?
