Lately, everyone is talking about The Rock’s upcoming video game movie adaptation called Rampage, and as it seems now, it is officially going to begin filming. The inspiration for the movie has been drawn from the gaming franchise of the same name (originated as an arcade game title in 1986), and it will unite Dwayne with his director friend Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas). The script for the Rampage is co-written by San Andreas screenwriters Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condon. As it seems so far a very well known and successful team is on this project which can only mean it will be awesome!
As far as the movie goes, the plot revolves around Dwayne who is a primatologist and the head of an anti-poaching unit operating in Rwanda, and he is basically called to save the day when gigantic, mutated versions of a crocodile, a gorilla, and a wolf are released to pillage the unsuspecting world. As far as cast is considered, Malin Akerman (Billions) plays the villainous head of the company responsible for creating these giant monsters in Rampage and he will be joined by names like Oscar-nominee Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike XXL) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) who are going to round out the main cast of the film.
Hiram Garcia, The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions co-founder and producing partner, explained that the Rampage is officially in production and he did that over a Twitter account which we verified, and it checks out. Garcia also, via that same tweet confirmed two big names – Akerman and Jake Lacy (Girls) as cast members in the movie while The Rock confirmed all others that we mentioned above.
As it looks like Rampage is starting just a day after Johnson, helped with his Fast & Furious castmates, launched the latest addition to the F&F franchise – the Fate of the Furious which turned out to be the biggest global box office opening ever. Dwayne is also tied up doing the Season 3 of HBO’s Ballers as well as promoting the raunchy big screen reboot of the Baywatch (which he co-headlines with Zac Efron) next month. Dwayne is seriously busy these days which is confirmed by the production start of the action/thriller Skyscraper later this summer.
As far as the Rampage is concerned it could actually become a rare video game film adaptation that is a success, both critically and commercially, especially with its “humans vs. giant monsters” premise which is a bigger and better fit for the blockbuster format than other video games. What will come out of it, we shall have to wait and see, as well as hope that it will be another hit which The Rock can add to his collection.
