Well, the role of Cable in Deadpool 2 has finally been assigned and to none other than to Josh Brolin who is also set to play Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Infinity War. What is inevitable here is that the Deadpool sequel will include some funny reference to the actor’s other superhero roles.
As you now, undoubtedly, know the Deadpool movie hosted a bunch of references to X-Men franchise films, but also to comic book movies – including a few jokes on account of Warner Bros./DC’s Green Lantern, in which Reynolds starred as well. Since Brolin is now set to make an appearance in two massive superhero movies, it is only logical that Deadpool 2 will make few connections and comments on his work as the MCU’s Thanos.
As we know from the first of Deadpool nothing was out of reach when jokes are concerned. Besides the jokes in the movie, the opening credits montage was used to make fun of those closest to the film like its stars, creative team, and the Fox studio executives who haven’t green-lighted the R-rated comedy sooner. Thanks to this it is fairly certain that we will hear something very interesting on Brolin’s account as well.
Since we have established an open opportunity, the question here is how exactly that nod to the Cable actor’s comic book character double duty will look like. Since Brolin plays two parts, it could reference his overtime work or possibly this guys jump from Avengers: Infinity War to Deadpool 2. The joke would be delivered by Deadpool himself, very likely, mainly because Cable is a more serious and stoic character than Wade Wilson. Never mind how the joke is delivered, a one-liner or maybe a post-credits stinger we believe that it would be appreciated by all comic and movie fans out there.
There is also another side of the coin here. There could be a scenario where there might not be any puns or nods to Brolin’s other superhero role. This might happen only if the writers have already finished the script and that there is no room for the joke or jokes. Although the Deadpool 2 is reported to begin production this spring, neither Reese nor Wernick confirmed or disproved that the script is already finished. It just might be in its final stages. But if the story is actually finished, there is only one way that the puns and jokes could be “inserted.” If you didn’t know the first movie allowed instances where the actors were able to improvise lines in certain scenes. This is what gives freedom to Reynolds or any other character to potentially add a reference to Thanos, without it actually being a part of the script.
In the end, it really isn’t important if there is a pun or not, this is mainly because the Deadpool sequel is one of the more highly anticipated films on Fox’s upcoming X-Men franchise slate. Most of the fans out there (including us) are just excited to see the inclusion of both Cable and Domino (Zazie Beetz) which makes the jokes on Brolin’s account fall into the second plan, or simply come as a bonus.
