The Leftovers is one of the HBO’s most popular shows, and it is finally making a return for Season 3. If you recall the Season 2 has finished in 2015, and thankfully HBO decided to take up the sequel right away. The premier date for Season 3 was pushed to spring 2017, but thanks to star Justin Theroux and his Instagram account we found out that the official release date is set for Sunday, April 16th on HBO. There is also the latest teaser trailer, that was shown on Feb. 17th, which you can watch here if you haven’t seen it so far.
What was a bit strange is the fact that official trailer for the final season kinda took us in a totally opposite direction than we expected. It brought up a question – Is Kevin a savior?
There was also a special video announcement which was released by the show’s creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta. In that video, they talked directly to fans and explained to them what to expect in the sequel.
Now for some details regarding the Season 3 of The Leftovers. Apparently, the new filming location is now Australia, but the show will start in Texas where it ended and gradually shift to Australia for the final episodes. As we managed to find out the location changed isn’t just a whim. As it turns out the main character Kevin (Justin Theroux) heard that his father, Kevin Sr. (Scott Glenn) was planning to move to the continent. Then, Kevin communicated with his Dad while in limbo with Kevin Sr. confirming that he was currently in Australia.
When asked by EW about the location change, Lindelof clarified:
“Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally,” showrunner Damon Lindelof explains. “And there’s also something about Australian cinema — it’s primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it’s Mad Max movies or Walkabout, or Waking Fright or Peter Weir movies.”
As you recall the first season of The Leftovers did not receive good reviews, and it kinda did send some mixed signals, but after the season 2 it really took off, and by the end of 2015 it became one of four favorite series. HBO President Michael Lombardo gave a statement saying “It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind The Leftovers for its third and final season.” He added “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”
As far as the cast is considered, The Leftovers have a newcomer, and it is Lindsay Duncan (Birdman) who has joined the cast for the Season 3. What we do not know is just who she is playing or how many episodes she will appear in, but we know that she will enjoy the company of Justin Theroux Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Carrie Coon, Janel Moloney, Kevin Carroll, Jovan Adepo, Regina King and Scott Glenn.
