The new 2018 Bentley Continental GT has been spotted testing in Sweden, and although it looks like it wears no camouflage, if you look closer, you could see the extra layer of disguise on the front and rear fenders. In addition, the prototype’s bottom part of the hood together with the front bumper are covered with fabric in the same color as the body of a vehicle, whereas the rear end has received a similar treatmen.
Luckily for us, the headlights and taillights of the Continental are visible, and we can see the graphics of the coupe’s lighting clusters that apparently come from the amazing EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept. The license plate reveals, after checking with U.K.’s Driver Vehicle and Licensing Agency (DVLA), that this Continental prototype is equipped with the good old 6.0-liter biturbo W12 engine which also powers the current model. We might have expected to see the powerplant from the Bentayga inside the Continental, but that didn’t happen.
This is known because the capacity of the new-generation powertrain in the plush SUV is 5,950 cc and it is expected to find its way to the brand-new Audi A8 as well as the next Flying Spur that is seen underneath a Panamera. Moreover, the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton was supposed to use the same mill, but considering that the new model might go all-electric and its production is postponed until the end of 2019, this may not happen.
The new Bentley Continental GT is going to be an all-new car that will be based on the MSB platform, which the latest Porsche Panamera uses as well. Because of the changed architecture, the new Continental will see a much-needed weight loss. Note that the top trim Supersports in coupe form weighs 6,063 pounds, while in the convertible version it reaches 6,393 pounds.
The new W12 powered Bentley Continental GT will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year, and hopefully, even before that date, we will get more info about it.
