Coming directly from the FCA India, the 2017 Jeep Compass SUV will finally debut on April 12, and it will be the first Jeep vehicle which development took place at local grounds. The new Compass is being produced at the FCA-Tata joint venture plant in Ranjangaon, whereas this model will be sold in several right-hand driven countries. This will be an important vehicle for Jeep in India because the American automaker sells Wrangler Unlimited and Grand Cherokee there, both of which aim the elite class.
The Jeep Compass will hit the market as the most affordable SUV, and it will thus target the majority of the country. Outside of the USA, the new version will substitute its predecessor and Patriot models as well, and it will be developed both in right and left-hand wheel drive. Let’s see more details about the 2017 Jeep Compass.
2017 Jeep Compass – Launch Date and Price Tag
As we have already mentioned, Jeep is going to unveil the new Compass SUV on April 12, 2017, whereas the sales are expected to start in the middle of this year, however, this has yet to be officially confirmed by the carmaker.
The starting price of the Compass will be Rs 16 lakh for the entry-level, whereas the range-topping will start from Rs 25 lakh. With this price tag, new SUV will be the most affordable in its segment as it will try to beat the likes of Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V to name a few.
Engine Specifications
Jeep will offer two engine options, and the customers will have a choice between one petrol and one diesel unit. The latter is Fiat’s 2.0-liter Multijet II powerplant that produces 165 bhp and 350 Nm of torque, whereas the turbo petrol version is a 1.4-liter turbocharged MultiAir engine that delivers 170 bhp.
However, there is a possibility that a larger naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Tigershark unit will be introduced and if it does, it will generate 160 bhp and 145 Nm of torque. This engine will only power the top trim, and both 2.0-liter and 1.4-liter units will be combined with a six-speed DSG automatic transmission. On the other hand, the diesel could either be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or a nine-speed automatic one. The Jeep Compass will be available with FWD configuration, but the owners can opt for AWD which is exclusively offered for the top-end 2.0-liter diesel version.
Exterior and Dimensions
Some of the design cues you can see on the Compass are taken from the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee. The overall styling of the SUV is rather conventional, but Jeep really tried to make this vehicle more authentic by adding new elements to the exterior. Another car that Compass looks like is the popular Renegade.
Jeep has a new global design doctrine for the premium models, and because of that the 2017 Compass has a rugged stance, whereas it is equipped with a chrome-laden horizontal front grille, small headlights infused with projector units, LED daytime running lights and wide bumper. The new model sits on thick tires and alloy wheels and it sports a wide shoulder on the sides. Meanwhile, the horizontal LED taillamps can be seen at the rear end, but the top-shelf model is the only one that will have sport dual-tone color scheme together with black roof. Most of the chrome details are positioned around the flanks and rear facet.
The length of the new Compass is 4,447mm, whereas the height and width are 1,651mm and 1,813mm respectively. The wheelbase is 2,634mm long whereas the ground clearance of this SUV is 205mm.
