Some rumors are circulating online about the BMW finally granting wishes of their fans for the new M series model. And according to sources close to BMW that is true, the M8 nameplate will be revived in 2019, and not only that, but the company is also going to produce not one but three models of the 8 Series family. It is safe to say that the hype is real. The upcoming models will be an M8 Coupe(F92), M8 Gran Coupe(F93) and M8 Convertible(F91).
According to BMW the first model to arrive is M8 Coupe. That will happen in 2019, and it will be followed by the M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupe the year after.
We all know that the project M8 was based on an idea of an ideal supercar. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. In the past, only one was made, and it was discovered only a few years ago. This model sounds like a proper myth. That car had a V12 engine, six-speed manual transmission, sexy body and even better interior. It was a dream come true for all BMW fans, but not a single one of them got the chance to buy it. Cruel world we’re living in.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel since we now know that BMW will release M8 models. That also means that M6 family is history. The M6 Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible will be replaced by their younger counterparts. Nothing short out of the ordinary about that.
When it comes to characteristics of new M8 models, they will have a modified version of a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. This unit means that power-wise it will be similar to M550i. Another car that will have a variation of this engine under the hood is F90 M5. It is speculated that the engine will generate 600hp.
We all know that to put those horses to work a car needs a proper transmission. BMW M8 will most likely have an eight-speed ZF-sourced automatic gearbox instead of DCT ones which were typical for M models. We think that this is smart because the DCT (dual-clutch transmission) will have significant problems taming all torque of the powerful V8’s torque especially considering that it is an all-wheel drive. It is estimated to be about 516 lb-ft of torque so you can understand why BMW opted for this change.
Some may say that all-wheel drive is kind of new for M lineup. Yes, however, the company made a U-turn there with the M5 as a pioneer, and it is expected that other models will follow in its footsteps. So, to cut to the chase, new M8 models are surely going to have the same feature as well. They will provide you with the proper traction all year long.
