The ongoing generation of the Wrangler received a proper send-off with the production of the Rubicon Recon which debuted in Chicago. Now, Jeep switches its focus to the next-generation Wrangler that is produced mostly out of aluminum, and that should be introduced later in the year.

Not much is known about the new Wrangler, but it has been spotted wearing some heavy camouflage. It was seen in Detroit and even though it has less camouflage than the last time it was spied, it is still difficult to determine what the new Wrangler will look like.

In order to achieve sleeker and more aggressive appearance, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will receive a few aerodynamic tweaks, while the front grille and a fixed windshield will be modified as well. This is going to be a first Wrangler that will be equipped with a backup camera showing the need of car maker to follow trends.

The new model is made of aluminum and steel, and since a lot of lightweight material is used, the 2018 Wrangler will be significantly lighter. There are several engine options, and the Pentastar V6 that is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission is the standard one. However, the customers can opt for either a new 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel and a turbocharged I4 “Hurricane” that will be added to the range. Rumor has it that a hybrid drivetrain will be available too, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will be as rugged as the previous version, but it will come with improved ergonomics and fuel efficiency. We don’t know when the new SUV will be officially introduced, but that can happen either at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year or at the Detroit Auto Show in 2018.
