Ford produced the ST line of Mondeo for the European market, and although this vehicle looks pretty, there is nothing else to it. The Mondeo ST is basically a visual package with a sporty and aggressive exterior, distinctive wheels, while there are some modifications inside. Furthermore, the European version also comes with slightly stiffer suspension resulting in a ride height that is 10 mm lower and that is about it.
What the Mondeo ST in Europe need is the 2.7-liter V6 engine that is offered in the US-designed Fusion Sport. The EcoBoost powerplant produces 325 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, and the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. The performance numbers have not been released yet, but Car & Driver tested this vehicle and managed to go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, which is a solid result. The top speed of the Ford Mondeo ST is electronically limited to 131 mph.
It has been more than a year since the Ford Fusion received the Sport version together with the mild facelift. Could Mondeo receive the same treatment considering that the mid-cycle refresh is coming soon? This is probably not going to happen because, during the introduction of the ST-Line last year, Blue Oval told Autocar that unfortunately there is not a market large enough to justify the costs of producing a Mondeo ST.
Hopefully, Opel is not going to do the same thing with its Insignia Grand Sport OPC in the upcoming years in order to satisfy the little demand for high-performance midsize sedans. We don’t know the exact date when Ford will launch the Mondeo in Europe, but according to Auto Bild, it should be revealed in Geneva next month.
