Tom Brady was suspended for the first four games of the season, and Jimmy Garoppolo needed to step up and lead the Patriots in Brady’s absence. He did play only two games as a starter because he missed the other two with the shoulder injury, but boy, did he impress. He looked like a guy that is ready to start and play for the New England Patriots or any other team.
When he was drafted, the Patriots were thinking that Brady is going to start to decline and that Garoppolo will be ready to take over when Brady retires. It’s not only the fact that Brady didn’t start to diminish, but he actually started playing better and led the team to two trips to the Super Bowl. Now, instead of Garoppolo taking over for Brady, the Patriots might be looking to deal him away as you can’t just push the legend of the franchise and the player that has led you to two Super Bowl trips out of the door for the young guy.
It seems that Cleveland Browns might be interested in making a deal with the Patriots as they already struck a deal to sent Jamie Collins to Browns in 2016. Now according to Ian Rapoport, the Browns want to make a deal for Jimmy-G.
“We do not know whether or not they will strike a deal for that, how willing the Patriots would be to actually part with someone who would be their backup next year and their big-time insurance policy in case Tom Brady ever gets injured” Rapoport reported.
If the Patriots want to get their first round pick back that was taken away because of the Deflategate, they can do it by trading away Jimmy. But, Tom is getting older, and injuries are more likely to happen. Garoppolo is a great backup to have. One way or the other, New England has some big decisions to make.
