The new K2XX Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra were introduced in 2013 as 2014 model years. Before, General Motors usually bring new generations after seven to ten years, but the competition has become fiercer, which shortened the cycle to only five years. Thus, we expect to see brand-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, at least the half ton models next year, while the HDs will arrive probably a year after that. The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado has been spied, and the truck you can see in the picture marks the next generation.
At first sight, one might think that it spotted a heavily camouflaged Ford F-150 because of the front window cut-down, which has been a trademark of Ford. However, it is indeed GM’s truck and what give it away are the wheel wells and indentations located beneath the cladding, which covers the rear bumper. Looking through the wheel wells, you can clearly see rear leaf springs, which was used on pretty much all vehicles in this segment with the exception of Ram.
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado should sport the biggest surprise under the hood. Taking into consideration that Ford announced a diesel V6 engine for their 2018 F-150 and Ram has offered the 1500 EcoDiesel since 2014, Chevrolet should include a six-cylinder diesel unit in the next-gen Silverado at some point.
GM almost offered a 4.5-liter Duramax diesel V8 for the ½-ton trucks, but they faced bankruptcy. Because of the strict emission and fuel economy regulations, the V6 powerplant is more likely, but the V8 is still a possibility. Rumor has it that higher trims will receive the DOHC 6.2-liter V8 unit. General Motors would thus depart from the convention which has been present with the OHV setup for the small-block V8 engines for more than 60 years. Some, if not all, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models should receive the 10-speed automatic transmission which is developed by GM and Ford together.
The 2019 Chevy Silverado will be introduced at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, but this might change. Stay tuned for more details.
