Apparently, John Cena made history last Sunday night at the Royal Rumble when he managed to tie Ric Flair’s record of 16 World Championships. But for some reason, this win was a huge surprise for many because WWE actually didn’t follow up on Cena’s chase for the record leading up to their match-up. This was according to many supposed to be a good old-fashioned swerve, but the consequences of this match seem to have a different story. After Cena tied Flair’s record his win was not at all celebrated in the manner it was supposed to be, and in the way many others expected.
According to Cageside Seats, WWE has a good reason do downgrade Cena’s Championship record, and they will continue to do so in the similar fashion. The reason listed behind all this is the fact that Cena isn’t expected to remain champion for too long. WWE just doesn’t want to attract any unnecessary attention toward them because Cena is due for a really short reign. The plan, at least according to some speculations, is to have Bray Wyatt leave the Elimination Chamber with the championship in order to set up a match with Orton at WrestleMania 33. This will mean that Cena will be arranged to take on somebody that, according to a former WWE writer, fans won’t bee too thrilled with.
Another big tell on entire situation is the lack of 16th win merch that somehow was expected, unlike the time that the WWE went all out when he won his 15th title. This could mean that WWE is going to put on hold the big celebration for two reasons – first is for the time Cena breaks the record at Summerslam and the second one, which is more likely until next year’s Wrestlemania.
