As Mazda announced, they are preparing a new engine technology that will be introduced next year. This technology will reduce fuel use by 30%, and it will be available without spark plugs, according to the latest report.

The new line of engines will be unveiled near the end of 2018 and the first vehicle to feature one is the next-gen Mazda 3, also known as the Axela in Japan. The technology is named homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI), and it functions in a way that ignites the mixture of air and fuel under high pressure, and because of that, the combustion is far more efficient compared to the usage of the traditional spark plugs. In addition to that, this method of combustion reduces emissions as well, which is another benefit.

If Mazda delivers 30% more efficient engines, it will certainly give them a significant advantage over the competition. This would be a huge leap forward in technology that has been already perfected to a high level.

After we see the new units in the 2018 Mazda 3, they will be incorporated into other vehicles in the line-up of the Japanese automaker. The first ones to receive new units are the extraordinary CX-5, Mazda 2 and Mazda 6. According to the reports from Nikkei, these new powerplants will be the second generation of the company’s SkyActiv technology.
