The Mustang Hybrid has been officially confirmed for 2024, with the production at Ford’s Flat Rock Plant in Michigan. There have been many rumors and speculations about the new Mustang Hybrid on the internet, but Ford’s Raj Nair has recently indicated that the 2024 model should come with an EcoBoost engine that would be paired with more than one electric motor.
Emme Hall of Roadshow by CNET talked with Raj Nair at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and he told her: ”In the Mustang, It’s all about performance.” He also added: “V8-like performance. At the low end, even more torque available with the electric motors, so it’s gonna be a very, very fun hybrid to drive.” This means that at least two electric motors will be in the 2020 Mustang Hybrid.
Nair told Emme: “So couple that [instant torque provided by electric motors] with a… an EcoBoost-type engine and you have a great combination.” Does this mean that they plan to combine the electric motors with an EcoBoost powerplant? Probably.
The real question here is which EcoBoost unit is going to be under the hood of the Mustang Hybrid. Rumor has it that the 2018 Ford Mustang will sport a 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit and V8 Coyote as well, instead of a 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6. Getting rid of the V6 may not be permanently, and it may come back in the 2024 Mustang Hybrid.
Ok, so we concluded that the 2020 Ford Mustang Hybrid could be also equipped with an EcoBoost V6 powerplant. But is it going to be the F-150’s 2.7-liter, or perhaps Lincoln MKZ’s 3.0-liter that delivers 400 horses? It is too soon to tell, but you should know that the Hybrid may be offered as an AWD vehicle because the electric motors could drive the front axle.
