This news is confirmed by Lamborghini‘s R&D boss who confirmed that their new SUV, which will go on sale in 2018, will be the only plug-in hybrid across the company’s range. The Urus SUV plug-in hybrid will be offered alongside a twin-turbo 4.0 L V8 Urus, as it was mentioned by R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani.
This will be the company’s first SUV since the LM002 (sold between 1986 and 1993) which is likely to make its first appearance sometime next year and go on sale in early or mid-2018. It will share its platform with now already famous Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga, and it will also feature a 48V powered active anti-roll suspension. Reggiani stated, “The design (of the Urus) is pure Lamborghini, It has evolved considerably since the (2015) concept and the finished car is much better inside and out”.
He also added that “Turbocharging will be completely mandatory” for the Urus because it is only logical to expect a huge amount of torque from an SUV. Reggiani went on by saying “A supersports car is completely different; you need the responsiveness of the engine, to feel the spark of every cylinder. We will keep normally aspirated engines for our other models. They are still the best choice.”
Thanks to Reggiani we also found out that Lamborghini will concentrate their R&D harder on the power, weight, and aerodynamics department because “handling is a function” of such vehicles. “We want to be a leader here and have a chance to change the rules of the game” he added, alluding to the latest and yet unknown projects that the company is working on.
Reggiani also said that there is a huge distinction between the Lambo’s four-wheel drive models and the always-increasing number of rear-wheel drive variants. As you know, the modern electronic chassis control system found on the Huracán LP580-2 can’t be a substitute for a four-wheel drive on any car, and that is exactly the reason why Lamborghini will continue to offer both versions.
