So far, the Japanese automaker has only offered their X-Trail with one engine option. Under the hood of the previous models, there was a 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel that produces 128 bhp. The fuel economy and CO2 emissions are satisfactory, but to be honest, the engine is weak for an SUV of this size.
For a long time, the customers were asking for a more powerful unit, and the 2017 Nissan X-Trail comes with one. The new vehicle sports a 2.0-liter diesel that delivers 175 bhp which is a significant improvement. According to Japanese car maker, this engine will boost sales of the already good model.
The previous engine which we have already mentioned may not be that powerful, but it was fuel efficient and much cleaner. Now the new unit adds power, but the fuel economy has declined to 50.5 mpg whereas the CO2 emissions are rated at 149g/km.
The new powerplant can be compared to the diesel in the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Santa Fe. There is no doubt that more customers will be attracted by the additional engine, but there are still some issues that need to be resolved. For instance, the new unit is very loud, and the noise in the cabin is inevitable, especially if you are carrying some load. This means that a quiet drive is not something that you will get with the 2017 Nissan X-Trail.
Gearbox
The 2.0-liter diesel unit is mated to a six-speed manual transmission that comes as standard. Customers can opt for a CVT, and this is the first time you can purchase the Nissan X-Trail with an automatic gearbox that sends power to four wheels. However, many people believe that this option is not the best one. Namely, this combination is great for the city driving but on the highway is not the best choice.
Rough Roads
On the slippery roads or a difficult terrain, the 4WD system offers great traction. So if you are driving even on unpaved paths, don’t worry because the 2017 Nissan X-Trail is pretty stable. If you want to save money, then the FWD variant is the way to go, but the 4WD is simply the better choice.
Is the 2017 Nissan X-Trail Worth Buying?
The new X-Trail is almost identical to the previous version. The drive is still comfortable, and the handling is also more than satisfactory. The interior is not the best, but the driver has the easy access to all the controls in the cabin that also offers enough space.

The current model with a 1.6-liter diesel engine is rated at 57.6 mpg and 129g/km. In the UK you would have to pay £35 more per year for the larger and more powerful unit, and you would also have to stop at the fuel pumps more often. This is certainly one aspect which you should bear in mind.
2017 Nissan X-Trail Price
The starting price of the 2017 Nissan X-Trail is £33,760. Some of the competitors such as the CX-5 and Hyundai Santa Fe are cheaper than the X-Trail. The problem is that the base trim Visia will not come out with the new engine.
If you already own an X-Trail and you want a more powerful version, than the new model is the right choice for you. The towing capacity is 1650 kg with the CVT gearbox while the manual variant can tow 2000 kg.
