As you all already know, Mercedes is currently in the process of updating its S-Class range of vehicles including those with the AMG badge. As you can see from the spy shots, we managed to get hold of images of an updated AMG’s model model which has been selling from 2014 – the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63. The images also reveal one one more thing, and that is the design updates on the outside that are pretty much going to be revolving around the front and back bumper and some changes in the front lights cluster.
Since the changes that affect the outside of the car are subtle, or minimal at best, the German automaker didn’t want to disappoint their buyers, so they put a little more effort in the interior design changes. They are seen in the replacement of the old models split screen setup by one giant display that will host the main instrument cluster and infotainment system. Company’s COMAND interface with current rotary dial controller might get changed as well, and the most likely thing to change it, and make it look like one with the new screen, is the smartphone-like system.
2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 Engine and Transmission
The mechanical updates have not been announced yet, and it seems it is impossible to come by any info from any sources. What we presume is that the current model’s seven-speed automatic will be replaced by company’s new nine-speed shifter, with some massaging from the AMG, of course. The latest version, as you probably know, relies on the twin-turbocharged 5.5 L V8 that is ready for change, and the likely candidate to replace it will be AMG’s new twin-turbocharged 4.0 L V8, which was recently revealed in the E63 where it delivers up to 603 HP. That will be a significant bump up in the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 power since the current S63 is rated at max 577 HP. To get all that new power trough the wheels and to the ground will require for the all wheel drive configuration to remain as a standard feature.
Release Date
What is worth noting is that most of the same updates will eventually be seen on the AMG’s S63 Coupe and S63 Cabriolet. The updated S-Class, including this S63, will probably show their face to the general public sometime in 2017 but as a 2018 model year, and will be apparently followed by the updated S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet models.
