Hyundai Ioniq has been introduced at the LA auto show. What sets this concept apart is that it’s fully autonomous. The vehicle features a driverless technology which we might see on some production models really soon and according to the company this option could be quite affordable due to the fact that it would use already implemented systems and only require few additional parts.
The forward-facing radar and a three-way camera set-up are parts of the autonomous hardware that will help the car steer without driver input. In addition, there are also GPS antenna and blind spot detection system, whereas the Lidar laser-based tech is also present.
Some of the parts you can find on the Ioniq production car have also made it to this autonomous concept. Among these features are automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and smart cruise control. However, these add-ons are used within driver assist system on the production model, and besides these options, there will be some more as well.
Hyundai hopes that once the Ioniq concept reaches production, it will not be as expensive as some would think. This is exactly the reason why the South Korean automaker used the features from the production model, to keep the price competitive.
Hyundai USA product boss Mike O’Brian stated: “We want to make it look like a car and not a science laboratory test. We have adapted the Ioniq’s existing systems and are developing the tech in house. We’re using lower computing power than most as we want people to be able to afford it, which is no different to the existing Hyundai ethos.”
The Hyundai Ioniq has been tested in South Korea, but we won’t see it on the streets of LA. Don’t be disappointed, though, because the two vehicles will be driven in Las Vegas in January next year after they are presented at the Consumer Electronics Show.
We still don’t know when this technology will be used. However, it appears that Hyundai is capable of developing an autonomous system. It is possible that we will see it in a production vehicle by 2024.
