Once 2017 starts, the new Tesla owners will have to pay when they are charging their vehicle at Supercharger network, as the company confirmed. However, the new customers will be given 400 kW of free Supercharging credits, which means that they will be able to cross about 1,000 miles. They will get this credit every year.

According to the statement from the company:”Beyond that, there will be a small fee to Supercharge which will be charged incrementally and cost less than the price of filling up a comparable gas car. All cars will continue to come standard with the onboard hardware required for Supercharging.”

This change will come into power from January 1, 2017, but if you order a car before the new year and if the delivery is taken by April 1, 2017, you have nothing to worry about because in this case, the change doesn’t apply to you. Tesla’s main reason to introduce this is to spread the Supercharger network considering that the Model 3 will soon be out.

They also said:“We will release the details of the program later this year, and while prices may fluctuate over time and vary regionally based on the cost of electricity, our Supercharger Network will never be a profit center”
