Tesla Motors managed to sell 9,156 units of the Model S in the third-quarter. Thus the Model S became the best-selling luxury sedan in the US and comparing to the previous third-quarter estimate its sales have risen by 5%. In addition to that, 5,428 Model X vehicles have been shipped during this quarter, as Tesla confirmed.
The Model S is on the top when it comes to sales, but that isn’t too fascinating. What is an interesting is that Tesla has beaten the rivals by a wide margin. It came in front of Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. Mercedes sold 4,921 units whereas BMW ended the third quarter with 3,634 vehicles sold. No other car exceeded the 2,000 mark, among which were Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Lexus, and Maserati. Also, if you combine Mercedes and Audi figures you still have more sales for Tesla which is another fascinating fact.
This is a good indicator that the popularity of electric vehicles is increasing. BMW spokesman, Kenn Sparks wrote in an email: “The numbers do show that electric cars are progressing and continuing to gain in popularity. That’s ultimately good for us all.”

According to an analyst note from Oppenheimer’s Colin Rusch, in order to stay solvent, Tesla will need to raise $12.5 billion by the end of 2018. Elon Musk denied these claims with a post on Twitter saying that they don’t need the money or at least not that much.
