Box office weekend is currently dominated by “The Magnificent Seven” that has opened in 3,674 locations with income of $12.7 million. If this trend continues, and we think that it will, it could easily reach and even surpass $35 million mark for the entire weekend.
Total price tag of this Western was about $90 million, and director Antoine Fuqua launched another very successful film in cooperation with Denzel Washington. The truly powerful crew has been assembled, and it includes already mentioned Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Chris Pratt and Byung-Hun Lee.
On this project, MGM and Columbia Pictures were supported by LStar Capital and Village Roadshow that co-financed this movie. Its official debut was at the opening night of Toronto Film Festival, and it received A- CinemaScore.
The last movie in which Denzel Washington stared under Fuqua was the “The Equalizer” and opening weekend for that one brought in $34.1 million. Certainly a good sign for the new “The Magnificent Seven.” We can also compare it with few other Westerns and see how much they earned. “The Hateful Eight” by Tarantino managed to gather $16.2 million on Christmas weekend while the “Django Unchained” reached very good $30.1 million when it was released in 2012.
When it comes to the plot of the new Antoine Fuqua movie we can say that it is a pretty much standard story about gunman’s that are gathered to help out a poor village that is facing a gang of ruthless thieves.
