Well, although the decision will be a justice call for Cowboys fans, they won’t be happy that NFL confirmed that ‘Dez caught it’ three years later. The controversial catch in 2015 NFC divisional round was called as an incomplete pass, but now the league confirmed that it should have been a completion. America’s Team fan-base knew that since the day one, but now it has been made official. Not that it matters now.
The league plans to change its catch rule once again. Speaking on that subject to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, New York Giants owner and competition committee member John Mara said the following: “I think where we are unanimous [are] plays like the Dez Bryant play in Green Bay, going to the ground, the Calvin Johnson play from a couple of years ago. I think all of us agree that those should be completions. So let’s write the language to make them completions.”
Mark Maske of the Washington Post claims that the competition committee is looking to change the rule in a manner where receivers won’t have to maintain possession of the ball after hitting the ground.
Every loyal Cowboys fan remembers Dez Bryant caught a ball for a 31-yard reception on 4th-and-2 deep into the fourth quarter during the match vs. Packers. This play would put Dallas squad in a position to win the game and progress further to the NFC Championship game. Green Bay Packers challenged the play, and the decision was overturned, and the catch was ruled incomplete. The game officials ruled that Dez Bryant didn’t maintain control over the ball when going to the ground. The Boys lost that game 26-21, and one fantastic generation of Dallas Cowboys players was stripped of any chance of future success.
There was similar controversy last year when New England Patriots played Pittsburgh Steelers. Jesse James’s touchdown catch was overturned as an incomplete pass at the dismay of Steelers fans.
Luckily the rule might be changed after the competition committee meeting in Indianapolis next week.
