Dallas Cowboys can become a defensive force in the upcoming season, and all they have to do is make the right moves during the break. This year’s playoff proves that you need to have a dominant defense if you want to make an impact. Teams such as the Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints who have Cam Newton and Drew Brees respectively have been eliminated, and squads such as the Eagles with Foles under center and the Vikings with Keenum proceeded.
The phrase “defense wins championship” is correct, and since we have established that, let’s take a look at the Dallas Cowboys and their defense. America’s Team has been known as an offensive-oriented crew, but they have used seven of their nine draft picks last years on defensive players. A good question is what is going to happen in this year’s draft? Dallas needs to patch some things up on the offensive end, but their 19th pick may as well be the defensive player. In fact, they must draft one!
However, the Cowboys do have some players on defense who can dominate the field. DE DeMarcus Lawrence had a fantastic season, and he will resign with the Cowboys this year. Moreover, defensive tackles David Irving and Maliek Collins are huge factors for Dallas, whereas Taco Charlton is expected to return.
The entire corps is led by linebacker Sean Lee, who was on-and-off this season with injuries. But, Dallas has a young Jaylon Smith who showed great potential and if they were to resign Anthony Hitchens in the offseason that would be excellent.
The secondary is the most problematic and the team brought some new names this year. Jourdan Lewis, Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown, Jeff Heath and Kavon Frazier are just some of the names who will have a major influence in the future. It is essential that Dallas adds one or two players who can change the dynamics of the defense, and there you go. They immediately become a contender, but we know that it is easier said than done. Hopefully, team’s front office will make the right moves.
