Rumor has it that Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is going to be fired, but franchise owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan: “It’s not in the Cowboys’ best interest right now to be considering a coaching change.”
Meanwhile, the option of making some other coaching staff changes is possible, but he said that Garrett’s “job is not an issue here at all.” One day before the interview, Jones told Dallas Morning News: “I do understand frustration right after you lose a game that has such meaningfulness. But I get to look at a lot of different things and have been around a lot of head coaches and coordinators. So I feel good about our head coach.”
It appears that Garrett is staying and we have to note that the Cowboys have only made it to the postseasons two times in seven years ever since he got a position as a head coach. This year feel particularly bitter since Dallas was filled with talent.
NFL reporter Ed Werder tweeted: “They have made playoffs twice in seven seasons with Garrett as HC, never advancing beyond divisional playoffs. If your goal is winning SB, it seems he’s proven that’s unlikely, failing with 12-win season from Romo/Murray and 13-win season from Dak/Zeke.”
The 2017 season has truly been uncommon for the Cowboys, especially because of Ezekiel Elliott and his suspension. We are not looking for any excuses why Dallas failed to enter the playoffs, but the fact is that injuries prevented some of the key players such as Sean Lee and Tyron Smith to have better stats and to be more often present on the field. Moreover, wide receiver Dez Bryant is not on the same level as he has been in previous years.
Although some people criticize Garrett, there are some, such as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and Mike Garafolo of NFL Networks who support him. Jones could stay in Dallas, but despite that, changes have to be made. What kind of changes? We’ll see.
