Last month, a woman named Kate McClure ran out of petrol on a Philadelphia highway when a homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt Jr. offered to help her out by giving her his last $20 to buy gas and get back on the road. At that moment, Kate didn’t have any money, but she didn’t forget about Mr. Bobbitt so soon afterward, she returned a couple of times to bring him food and clothes.
It was surprising for her how selfless Mr. Bobbitt was. “One day I stopped to see him and had a few things in a bag to give him, one of which was a box of cereal bars so he could have something that he could carry around and eat. He was very appreciative as usual and the first thing he said was “do you want one?” Another time I dropped off 2 gift cards and a case of water … the first words that came out of his mouth were ‘I can’t wait to show the guys’ (there are two others he hangs out with and they all take care of each other),” Kate McClure recalls.
However, it was not long before she realized that it was not enough just to bring this 34-year-old food and clothes – she wanted to find him accommodation, as well. That’s how this woman came up with the idea of setting up the GoFundMe fundraiser. “I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day. Truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully, with your help I can be the one to give it to him,” she concluded. For the time being, she managed to raise $110,000 for Johnny Bobbitt who saved her that night when she didn’t know what to do while her “heart was beating out of her chest.”
