The 2017 Tokyo Motor Show brought us something rather interesting this year. Many of the visitors were able to see it, but for those of you who weren’t we bring you the Nissan IMx Concept, company’s electric drive and futuristic crossover design study.
The IMx Concept, according to the Nissan is equipped with a high-capacity battery pack that has increased energy density which allows this SUV to travel over 600 km in electric-only mode on a single charge. The IMx Concept has company’s new EV platform that holds the battery pack flat under the floor, which allows for more space in the cabin and a lower center of gravity which is important if you want to have, as Nissan puts it, “sharp handling that promises to redefine the crossover segment.”
The Nissan IMx Concept is propelled by a pair of high-output electric motors which power each axle thusly offering an electric AWD. Those two electric units provide a total of 429 HP and 700 lb-ft of torque which makes this vehicle a pretty fun SUV to have. Besides the high power output, it also boasts a very futuristic design that has sharp and wide body panels that are overlapping each other in order to create a sense of layers. To add to this, the IMx Concept also has distinctive vermillion accents over its pearl white paint.
The interior is heavily inspired by the concept of space found in traditional Japanese houses. In order to create a sense of having more room than there actually is the interior has four seats that have a wrap-around wood paneling with a minimalistic design, plus there is basically no physical switches inside. It is all made in a flowing clear look thanks to Artificial Intelligence that can be controlled through eye movements and hand gestures. The Nissan IMx Concept also comes with the Autonomous driving that previews a future version of the Nissan’s ProPilot system that will have a fully-autonomous operation. It is just like in those sci-fi movies like I, Robot and AI, when you activate the autopilot the steering wheel gets retracted inside the dashboard, and the seats will recline to give you more space to relax.
Nissan says that this will be highly useful in the near future and that it will make your car one less thing to worry about. It will, for instance, be able to take you to the airport and then park itself and recharge (if there is a need for that). It will also be set to wait for you at the terminal when you land and take you to your home. This is all part of the Nissan’s Seamless Autonomous Mobility plan for the future. Neat isn’t it?
