Besides all the other updates and refreshments, Ford is also working on a redesigned Focus Wagon for the 2019 MY. The company is definitely very busy, and no one can deny that, but the fact that this body style will not be offered back in the States has no justification.
As we managed to find out the US market will only receive redesigned sedan and hatchback body styles which is typical since this was the policy we saw with the previous generations. There is one change to this though, and it’s the fact that the cars will be arriving from China instead of being built locally as it was so far. Why is this so no one knows, but some presumptions are that if the Wagon were sold Stateside, it would definitely take a huge chunk out of the VW Golf SportWagen customers. It would also impact the Subaru Outback but on a lot lesser scale.
In the EU market, the 2019 Ford Focus Wagon will have a huge competition and the most fierce will come from the Hyundai i30 Touring, Opel Astra Sports Tourer, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake. Ford will have to go all out with this redesign if they want any chance at beating them in any aspect, and we do not believe that it will be a problem. So far, from spy shots of the earliest test mules, we found out that the 2019 Focus Wagon will be slightly longer and wider than the one on the streets now. That is a good thing because an increase in size and width instantly lead to more space for both passengers and cargo which is a primary thing to consider with this type of vehicles.
The engine compartment is still a mystery though, and we do not know anything about the units that will find their way under the hood, but there is one thing certain, Ford will surely turbocharge all of those. We also find out that the company is planning new versions of the ST Wagon and ST Diesel Wagon which will without any doubt gladden the performance-oriented fans. The ST Wagon will most likely use the same unit found in the Focus ST that is prepared for the U.S. market, and it’s the 2.0L turbocharged inline 4 unit, while the ST Diesel Wagon’s powertrain is still unknown.
So far the overall belief is that the redesigned Focus will firstly debut its sedan and hatchback body and it will be sometime in early 2018, while the Wagon version is expected some six to twelve months later.
