The relationship between the head coach and the team owner has to be good for the squad to have good results. Is Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett just a puppet to the organization owner Jerry Jones, or he has some authority over the team? The first question Scruggs had to answer was whether Garrett’s position is safe if Dallas loses to the San Francisco 49ers next week. Scruggs pointed out that Garrett was the NFL Coach of the Year and that it was the management who let Barry Church and Brandon Carr walk away in free agency, weakening the Cowboys defense. Jason Garrett has not much to do with the fact that Chidobe Awuzie, Taco Charlton, and Jeff Heath are not living up to the expectation.
And for those fans who said that Dallas was a Super Bowl team, Scruggs told that they weren’t realistic about their squad because Dallas doesn’t have a Super Bowl defense.
On the question whether Garrett is a puppet to Jones, Scruggs said: “That is not the first time I have been asked that question. Guys know what they are getting into when they decide to work for Jerry Jones. Garrett turned down jobs with the Ravens and Falcons to stay. He was promoted to head coach, and he signed up for all distractions and involvement that come with Jones. How is that for an answer?“
Jones said he wanted to bench players who were protesting, but all he did is put the spotlight on the franchise. Scruggs explained that he was thinking about money and nothing else. According to him, Jones puts finances before his player’s issues, and the owner pointed out that the flag comes first before any other matter. And what are these other problems? Racial inequality and social injustice.
