OpenStack company Mirantis opines that a technological and financial alliance with Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) that includes an investment of $100m will greatly boost the open-source cloud project by accelerating the introduction of additional enterprise features.
The co-founder and president of Mirantis, Alex Freedland, commented that having Intel as a partner will help them demonstrate that open licensing, open development and open design is what beckons in cloud infrastructure software in the world. Mirantis’ objective is to ensure that OpenStack is the best method to supply cloud software, outperforming available proprietary solutions.
Intel Capital spearheaded a $100m dollar funding initiative along with the new investor Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS).Current investors WestSummit Capital, Sapphire Ventures, Insight Venture Partners, August Capital and Ericsson (ADR)(NASDAQ:ERIC) also took part in the investment comprising of spending and equity.
OpenStack was started in 2010 by Nasa and Rackspace Hosting, Inc.(NYSE:RAX).It is an open source project to produce components for developing private and public clouds on top of standard hardware. It currently enjoys the backing of over 200 vendors including VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW), Red Hat Inc (NYSE:RHT), Intel, Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL), Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), and others.
As per Forrester, a consultancy for technology research, OpenStack has become the fifth most popular cloud platform among Global 2000 enterprises. Today’s announcement will boost further adoption by reducing integration and deployment challenges in new and existing data centers globally.
Mirantis remains the only vendor fully committed to just OpenStack. Diane Bryant of Data Centre Group, Intel commented that Intel’s Investment in Mirantis aims at providing open cloud infrastructure to everybody in the industry in keeping with Intel’s cloud for all initiatives. She added that businesses should have choices in their infrastructure software. OpenStack is the suitable open solution for cloud-native services and applications. Intel’s collaboration with Mirantis will make sure the supply of vital novel enterprise features aiding in the creation of tens of thousands of cloud.
The technology alliance with Intel will concentrate on incorporating additional capabilities for enterprise level deployments. The two companies will focus on support for big data, network integration, storage and performance at scale.
