Concerns over the level of snooping by government agencies is forcing companies to go the extra mile all in the attempt of ensuring users data remain secure and private. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) was the first to react when it became clear that the U.S government prying eyes was all over data shared on the platform. It’s been over a year since Edward Snowden made the stunning revelations, but Facebook is not relenting on its effort to win users confidence on the level of security on any data shared.
Email Notifications Encryption
The giant social network is now encrypting emails related to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) accounts that people receive on their email address. For years, people have received emails when people ‘like’ their post, sends them a direct message or comment on their posts. The emails have for many years acted as a weak spot that hackers could use to access other messages if they had access to their email address.
Facebook is closing the loophole by offering users an opportunity to encrypt any notifications they receive on their email accounts using PGP. Users only have to submit their public encryption key to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), to enable the encryption of all the notifications they receive on their email address. PGP is a widely used standard to encrypt emails on transit.
Upgrade Hailed
At first, the service is expected to be common with people who use encrypted emails but expected to gain momentum as more people gain the much-needed exposure to PGP keys. The security solution has already been hailed by a committee that protects journalist’s interests.
The latest security upgrade comes on the heels of the giant social network initiating the standard HTTPS format for securing Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) accounts in the wake of Snowden’s revelations. Facebook is also available on Tor, a network used by some Facebook users to trick people of their current locations as it keeps changing with each login.
