2Sammy Watkins, WR, Los Angeles Rams
The one crucial thing that Cowboys don’t have on offense is a constant deep threat that will put defenses on a notion. A few years back, Cowboys acquired Brice Butler for this purpose, but he wasn’t nearly as effective as they wanted. Other Dallas receivers Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley, don’t fit this profile.
With Cowboys game focused on running and players that can catch short passes there is no one on the roster to pose a deep threat and to punish opposing defenses for playing up close. That’s where Sammy Watkins would fit in perfectly. Watkins didn’t live up to his draft expectations, but the reason for that is that Bills drafted him too high and paid far too many picks for him. So when he failed to become their No1 receiver, some declared him a bust, which he definitely isn’t.
The reason why Cowboys should pursue him is that he might come in cheap. He fell in the pecking order in LA behind Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. In year behind us, he had 28 receptions for 490 yards and five touchdowns.
Acquiring Watkins doesn’t guarantee a WR that will have 1,000 yards a season, but he will definitely pose a serious threat in the deep field and on play actions especially when you have a player of Ezekiel Elliott quality in the backfield.
