So far, rumors have suggested that the platform from the next-gen Grand Cherokee would be adapted for the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, but this turned out to be false. FCA head Sergio Marchionne confirmed at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show that the two Wagoneer models will be body-on-frame and not unibody vehicles.
This announcement came as a bit of shock because Sergio himself hinted that the new Grand Cherokee might be based on the modular platform built for Alfa Romeo. The Grand Wagoneer that is priced at $140,000 cannot be a body-on-frame SUV, according to Automotive News. They believe that Jeep wants to go against GM’s trio consisting of Chevy Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon.
“Marchionne has previously said that he coveted the profits GM generates from its large SUVs,” says Automotive News. This can be done, especially because FCA will produce the two Wagoneer models at Warren Truck Assembly, where the Ram 1500 pickup is currently manufactured.
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer will cost between $60,000 and $100,000, this fits just nicely to the expected price for this model. Compared to the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer will have a longer wheelbase and the body-on-frame construction will definitely improve off-road capabilities of both vehicles. Moreover, the tires need to be off-road ready, and with all this in mind, there is no doubt that the 2020 Jeep Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer will be great on rough terrain.
