Imagine a minivan with sporty accents. Well, you don’t have to because we present you the 2020 Honda Odyssey Type R, which comes with all the goodies such as Type R wheels and body kit, red accents and Championship White paint. There is no way you could select a Chrysler Pacifica, Kia Sedona or Toyota Sienna over this Odyssey. It sounds crazy to have a people hauler combined with aggressive design and all the other benefits of the Type R badge. But it is also so cool!
Exterior
The Honda Odyssey was presented at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and it drove a lot of attention of the visitors. The first thought that comes to your mind when you see it is “Oh, there is a cool minivan” while the second is “How amazing would it be to combine the Odyssey and the Type R?” In the front, the Type R Odyssey would have the red Honda emblem on the gloss black grille and the large vents in the corners with the fog lamps housed in them. To give it an aggressive look, there is a spoiler up front whereas standard mirrors are replaced by the gloss black units on the sides.
Moreover, side skirts with a red stripe are added as well, whereas black door handles provide a great contrast to the white exterior. The minivan’s rear segment would come with the Civic Type R’s spoiler which gives it a mean look while a triple exhaust outlet is something that cannot be avoided. To give the car that special midnight appearance, the rear windows and the moonroof had to be blacked out.
Honda Odyssey Type R Interior
The interior is the perfect mixture of family functionality and practicality and the Type R goodies. You would have to carry over the front seats, the instrument cluster and the infotainment display straight from the Civic Type R, but dashboard had to be redesigned slightly to support these elements. A six-gear shifter is a must with the Type R steering wheel that brings the traditional red emblem calling you inside. Despite these fancy and sporty details, all the family functionality carries over from the regular Odyssey, and things such as the rear cabin monitor, DVD player and a reverse camera are standard.
Higher-quality materials are introduced, the door open automatically and once you step inside you would be enchanted with the red ambient lighting which illuminates the ground. There are five-point racing harnesses for the rear seats in case you decide to test this bad boy. Family protection comes first. You would be able to remove the center seat as easily as in the traditional Odyssey for extra space inside. The third-row bench is carried over, and it is the same like in the regular version with the exception of color – red and black are used. Meanwhile, Japanese carmaker would replace the entertainment center for the rear with the larger screen that offers the Type R graphics, while a red Honda logo is located above the Type R lettering when you open the rear hatch, completing the amazing cabin design.
Drivetrain
The first thing that comes to mind regarding the 2024 Honda Odyssey Type R’s engine is a 2.0-liter from the Type R. It is good for 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, but this might not be good enough for this fascinating minivan. We need something better. Even though it would be an improvement over the regular 3.5-liter V6 rated at 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, the company would look for the solution in the Acura NSX. That’s right! The perfect engine for the Odyssey Type R would be a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates 500 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, but it would have to be modified and detuned to produce 445 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. Now we are talking!
With this and some minor tweaks such as repositioning of the dual air intakes to suck air directly from the vents in the corners of the front fascia, you would get a minivan which can reach 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and the top speed that might reach up to 186 mph. Now that is just insane! To wrap things up, the Odyssey Type R would come with a standard MacPherson setup up front and a double-wishbone system in the back. Last but not least, the vehicle would come with two different keys – “Dad’s,” which unleashes the beast and “Mom’s” which limits the output to 280 horsepower since she is the one driving the kids to the baseball games.
2020 Honda Odyssey Type R Price
The Type R is already expensive, and with added functionality and space of the Odyssey, it would be even more costly. In other terms, the 2020 Honda Odyssey Type R would set you back at least $56,000. Would you like to see this model in production? Saying ‘no’ is just impossible.
