BMW is currently developing the new 8-Series model, and there have been some spy photos that will help us see what the new car will look like. Back in March last year, BMW senior executive stated that the company wanted to produce more high-end models and add them to the lineup which was the first hint. One of those models will be the i8 Spyder, while we also expect to see the 8-Series Coupe, Convertible, and the Gran Coupe that is a possibility as well.

Based on the spy shots, we can conclude that the new 2020 BMW 8-Series will come with a low roof, while generally speaking it will be a wide vehicle similar to the Aston Martin DB9. There will be four seats in a two plus two arrangement just like inside the DB9.

Almost ten years ago, the BMW tried to produce a large coupe-like sedan that was supposed to be based on the 2007 CS concept, but the financial crisis hit entire world, which forced BMW to give up on the project. However, the company was still driven by the desire to manufacture a large coupe, and in 2013 the Gran Lusso Coupe concept was unveiled. BMW developed this concept together with Pininfarina, and it was intended to hint at some finer design elements of the new 8-Series.

The 8-Series will be based on the company’s carbon fiber-infused CLAR platform that underpinned the 2016 7-Series for the first time. The platform is compatible with electrified powertrains, but it also indicates that the 8-Series will be lighter. Furthermore, improvements will come with the latest infotainment technology that brings the next-gen gesture control.

The BMW trademark filings suggest V8, V12, M Performance and M options for the new vehicles, while the filings include “850”, “860”, “M850” and “M8” versions. The last one may sport the Power eDrive plug-in hybrid, which combines a turbocharged I4 unit with two electric motors for a complete output of incredible 670 hp. The V-12 model will be equipped with an M760i xDrive sourced 6.0-liter twin turbocharged powerplant good for 600 hp.
