Even though there is enough life in the ongoing 991 generation and the GT2 has yet to come out, German automaker has already focused on the next version of its most famous model. The 2019 Porsche 911 prototype has been seen at the Nurburgring undergoing some tests, and it clearly revealed its Mission E-derived taillights. However, there is something else that caught our attention.
Namely, if you take a closer look, you will clearly see a cap placed at the rear fender on the passenger’s side, whereas a second fuel door is positioned at the regular spot. What this means is that this might be a 911 plug-in hybrid currently in the process of development and this new cap is where you are going to charge the battery pack.
We need to take this information with a pinch of salt and Porsche could have installed this just to deceive us. Despite the extra camouflage, a small gap around the edges of the round cap is noticeable, and it appears that the whole area is completely flat. In addition, if this were to be a future hybrid model, it would have a yellow high-voltage warning sticker, which is missing this time.
Perhaps this is not a prototype with a hybrid powertrain, but maybe the 992 is going to be electrified. Let me remind you that only a couple of weeks ago, Porsche sales boss Detlev von Plate said that a 911 hybrid model is in consideration as a part of the Volkswagen Group’s green push.
What we will not see soon is an all-electric powertrain, but a hybrid might come in the near future. The regular 2019 Porsche 911 is going to be launched at the beginning of 2019 which means that a gas/electric version could come at the end of a decade. If it is even in the pipeline.
